Our excursions, which are organised in cooperation with art:berlin, guide to important examples of modern architecture in Berlin and environs.

Excursions

Tour 1: Classicism and Modernism: An architectural history tour in the Bauhaus Archive district
Sat., 17 March / Thu., 12 April 2012, 2:00–4:00 pm
A walking tour through the Tiergarten quarter leads from the Bauhaus Archive to the Cultural Forum. Along the way participants will encounter traditional architecture such as Villa von der Heydt and the Italian Embassy, as well as some prominent examples of modern architecture, including Shell House and the New National Gallery.

Tour 2: An open-air Exhibition of Modernism — Berlin Hansa District
Sat., 31 March / Thu., 26 April 2012, 2:00–4:00 pm
On the occasion of the 1957 building exhibition ‘Interbau’ in Berlin, architects such as Walter Gropius and former Bauhaus students Gustav Hassenpflug and Eduard Ludwig presented exemplary concepts for architecture and urban planning. This tour introduces participants to the urban development concept of the Hansa district, among other topics. Price: 15 € / members 13 €

Tour 3: Gropiusstadt 50 Years Later — Ideal and Reality
Sat., 21 April / Thu., 10 May 2012, 2:00–4:00 pm
This architectural tour through Gropiusstadt shows changes that were made to the original plans of Walter Gropius and how the architectural and urban planning concept has stood the test of time during the 50 years since the commencement of construction.

Tour 4: Berlin — City of Design: Between Claim and Reality
Sat., 12 May / Thu., 7 June 2012, 2:00–4:00 pm
‘Design’ has become a ubiquitous label; Berlin itself is marketed as a ‘City of Design’. What ideas and practical applications are associated with this artistic claim? Tour participants will be introduced to interior design showrooms, new fashion labels, design hotels, unconventional architecture and will get to know the people making it happen.

Tour 5: Bus tour: Architecture in Berlin by Members of the Bauhaus
Sat., 26 May, 2:00–5:00 pm
This bus tour will lead to the most important buildings in Berlin that were designed by Bauhaus masters or students during the period of the Weimar Republic. The architectural principles of the successive Bauhaus directors Gropius, Meyer and Mies van der Rohe are represented by buildings such as the Sommerfeld Houses, the apartment block with balcony access on Neuchateller Strasse or Lemke House. '

Tour 6: Day excursion to Dessau: Architecture at the Bauhaus
Sun., 17 June, 9:00 am–6:00 pm
On this day-long trip to the ‘City of the Bauhaus’, you will become acquainted with the buildings that have most strongly shaped the image and public perception of Bauhaus architecture – the Dessau Bauhaus buildings and Master Houses. The housing settlement Dessau-Törten illustrates the urban planning concepts of the Bauhaus under Walter Gropius. In addition, the former Employment Agency (Walter Gropius), the apartment block with balcony access (Hannes Meyer) and the ‘Kornhaus’ (Grain House, Carl Fieger) demonstrate the architectural diversity of the Bauhaus during the Dessau period.

Tour 7: Tracing the footsteps of Mies van der Rohe in Berlin

Special event: Day of Architecture
Sat., 23 June / Sun., 24 June, 10:00 am–5:00 pm
In 2012, the German ‘Day of Architecture’ will take place on the last weekend in June. In cooperation with the Berlin Chamber of Architects, the Bauhaus Archive will open its doors to the public. Special guided tours will not only provide insights into the work of Bauhaus architects, but also allow visitors a view behind the scenes of the Archive’s work and its world-famous Bauhaus Collection.
