MyABC – Display window exhibition
08.02.-29.04.2021

Parallel to the Instagram Challenge MyABC, the temporary bauhaus-archiv is presenting a letter installation which visitors can view through the display window. The installation features over 100 letters taken from signs which once shone brightly in various cities and are now preserved at the Buchstabenmuseum Berlin. Massive and intricate, knee-high and life-size, neon and LED – the exhibition presents a poetic display of urban typography in black, grey and white spanning six decades. Visitors can discover the small Zs and Ss of a Viennese optician, the large white S from the Tagesspiegel at Potsdamer Straße in Berlin, the bulky Bs of the Deutsche Bahn, the elegant B and Z of Mercedes Benz and a neon M from Kaffeemitte in Berlin.

The exhibits are part of a collection of over 3,000 letters kept at the Buchstabenmuseum in Berlin, the first museum in the world to collect publicly displayed typography and present it as an integral part of urban history. For over 15 years, the museum has preserved and documented constructed letters and signs at its premises in the Berlin S-Bahn arcades in the Hansaviertel near the Bellevue station.

A joint project by the Buchstabenmuseum Berlin and the Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung.
