"Bauhaus Playroom is a new room installation at the temporary bauhaus-archiv. It offers a preview of the educational programme to be presented in the tower of the newly constructed Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin. The installation invites visitors to try their hand at selected exercises from the original Bauhaus preliminary course. At different stations, visitors can sketch or write their ideas on paper or construct objects using various materials. When they leave, their designs remain behind as evidence of the kind of creative energy our visitors bring to the temporary bauhaus-archiv and of the diversity of these historical exercises.
The Bauhaus preliminary course consisted of a broad range of exercises, with which Bauhaus instructors introduced students to the fundamentals of design, art and space. Consequently, the installation will feature an ever-changing selection of exercises throughout the exhibition period. Visitors are presented with individual exercises at each station, selected from the “original bauhaus exercise book”, which can be completed with simple methods. For example, one station features an old-fashioned typewriter, as office equipment was occasionally used as creative tools at the Bauhaus.
