Unfolding Futures. The Art of Growing Up

A presentation by young bauhaus

09.05.-12.06.2025

We, young bauhaus, are a group of young people who are interested in creating art and discussing the Bauhaus together. All that a young bauhaus needs is a room, material and us. That’s why we meet once a week at the temporary bauhaus-archiv to get creative, draw, discuss, plan and occasionally tattoo lemons.

From 9 May to 12 June, we will be presenting our next exhibition “Unfolding Futures – The Art of Growing Up” at the temporary bauhaus-archiv. Through our artworks, we aim to explore the topic of becoming adult – a phase of dynamic change, learning new things every day and looking back – perhaps for the first time – at one’s own past. When do we truly become adults and does this process ever stop? What do we leave behind, and what do we gain? Who determines our future? What exactly are growing pains, and when we finally “grow out of them”, where do we “grow into”?

We want to share our personal stories of growing out and growing up, as well as critically reflect on the battles we’ve waged and the resistance we’ve encountered on our path to adulthood. And to offer a glimpse of a utopian future in a world that might also need to do a bit of growing up. It’s about bubble gum machines and grey hair, putting down roots and developing visions, hiding from and presenting yourself to the world – openly and unapologetically.

Growing up is something we have in common with everyone else. Even the young students commencing their studies at the Bauhaus had to navigate this new phase of life in uncertain times. As a school, the Bauhaus was a place of learning, but it was also a place where young people could discover who they really were. We found inspiration in their courage to experiment and their commitment to freedom.
