  • “ACV (Algorithmic Cultural Vandalism)” is an ongoing research project by the artists Pietro Lugaro and Alessandro Mac-Nelly, which explores the relationship between symbols and artificial intelligence (AI). The installation invites visitors to produce a drawing using a robotic arm. The robot is powered by AI, trained on information in the archive containing numerous symbols, glyphs, talismans and typefaces from various cultures. In this experiment, humans and machines create symbols together. The installation aims to examine where to draw the line between meaningful drawing and mere scribbling. Ambiguities and the risk of misunderstandings are all part of the experience. Interestingly, people always try to create meaning even when the AI refuses to play along. In this way, ACV expresses its critique of symbolic systems.
