The Bauhaus student Katja Rose attended the preliminary course taught by Josef Albers. Her portfolio with 45 sketches is now preserved at the Bauhaus-Archiv. It also serves as inspiration for trying out those sketching exercises from way back when. Create your own sketchbook by folding a piece of paper and then – start drawing! This time we’ll be tracing out letters freehand and discovering what we can do with them.

  • You'll need:
    – print-out of the sketchbook template
    – scissors
    – pencil
    – pencil sharpener
    – rubber eraser

    How to fold your sketchbook

    1. Print out the sketchbook template on a DIN A4-size piece of paper.

    2. Place the paper horizontally in front of you.

    3. Fold it in half lengthwise and unfold it again.

    4. Fold it in half from the other direction and unfold it again.

    5. Flip the paper over.

    6. Fold it in quarters by the bending the outside edges to the middle.

    7. Unfold the paper again.

    8. Flip the page over and fold it in half. Cut along the marked line with your scissors.

    9. Unfold the paper. In the middle you should see a rhombus-shaped hole. Fold the sheet along the outside edges and flip these back.

    10. Slide the pages together as shown in the picture and collapse into a small book.

    11. All done! You can now fill your small sketchbook with lots of drawings.
