by Julia Marquardt

The photographer Joseph D. Jachna studied at the Institute of Design in Chicago in the 1950s. One of his assignments was to take photos of various shapes in the city which could be arranged to form letters. Now here’s your assignment: venture out in search of letters with your camera! You’ll be surprised at how many letters you can discover in your area.

  • You'll need:
    – a camera
    – a downtown area with streets and buildings

    1. Search your surroundings for architectural details, forms and structures which resemble letters.

    2. Take pictures of them with your camera and try out different angles and distances. Notice how your perception can change.
