1923: Art & technology: A new unity With Jakob Schwerdtfeger
The First Major Exhibition
We follow in the footsteps of the first major Bauhaus exhibition of 1923. In a kind of performance showcase, the school now had to account not only to the Thuringian government that financed it, but also to present itself to a broad public: what did the Bauhaus have to offer four years after its founding? The workshops worked at full capacity to display the full range of products. Everyday objects, furniture, textiles, paintings and sculptures, architectural designs and the model house Am Horn, theatre productions, and even an entire “Bauhaus Week” with events and concerts were presented in Weimar.
Together with Jakob Schwerdtfeger, art historian, comedian and author, we explore the various facets of the exhibition and delve into its origins. We also shed light on a piece of family history – Jakob Schwerdtfeger is the great-grandson of a Bauhaus member who was also represented in the 1923 exhibition.
