1927: Bauhaus Soundscapes
With Kai Hinrich Müller
On Musical Life at the Bauhaus
The ninth episode is devoted entirely to music and to musical life at the Bauhaus – and it was remarkably diverse. Numerous composers and musicians visited the Bauhaus, gave lectures and performed concerts – among them the famous Béla Bartók, who appeared at the Bauhaus Dessau in 1927. They inspired the Bauhaus members – and were themselves inspired by the school. The students, too, played music and composed. Music was even part of the curriculum, and at the school’s festivities the legendary Bauhaus Band played for dancing.
This time, we talk about the role of music with musicologist Kai Hinrich Müller, who has been researching musical life at the Bauhaus for several years and is bringing the music of that period back to life today.
