1928: Fabric that (textile) dreams are made of
With Esther Perbandt
Weaving at the Bauhaus
In the tenth episode of the second season of “About Bauhaus”, we take a closer look at one of the Bauhaus’s most successful workshops: the weaving workshop, also known as the textile workshop or even the “women’s department”, as it was primarily women who were trained there. When Hannes Meyer arrived at the Bauhaus as the new director in 1928, the weaving workshop had already undergone considerable change: its focus had shifted from craft to industrial production and from unique artistic pieces to serially produced functional textiles.
Together with Berlin-based fashion designer Esther Perbandt, we walk through the historic school building in Dessau and talk about the weavers and their work. How did the textiles develop? What role did Hannes Meyer play? Why, despite all its modernity, was there still sexism at the Bauhaus – and why did the school never establish its own fashion department?
