The Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung in Berlin has one of the most extensive collections of typographic works from the Bauhaus. With the selection shown here, we would like to provide insight into this rich collection and illustrate the diverse possibilities and the multifaceted approach to this medium at the Bauhaus. Typography played an important role at the Bauhaus from its founding. Defined in the early years by the expressive and calligraphic visual language of Johannes Itten, the Bauhaus contributed to the spread of so-called New Typography, particularly through the teachers László Moholy-Nagy, Herbert Bayer and Joost Schmidt. Primarily used in the school’s own promotional materials for itself and its products, but increasingly for commissions as well, the works are often characterised by clear blocks of text, the use of concise typographic characters, standardised formats, the mingling of image and type, and strong contrasts in terms of colour, size and position.
