The Werkbund became famous for its contribution to arts and crafts, industrial design and architecture. Artists and industrialists collaborated together in this working group, and it is not without reason that the most renowned members can be seen as the forefathers of the Bauhaus generation today. However, the Werkbund’s complex discussion of modern work in the factory is hardly known. Permeated by the artistic will of a time between a romanticised sense of mission and the orderly beat of the machine’s rhythm, it played a significant role in Walter Gropius’s early work.
