Today, the name Marcel Breuer is primarily associated with his famous tubular steel furniture. However, Breuer also saw himself as an architect in particular. He began working at Walter Gropius’s architectural office early on and founded his own architectural studio in Berlin in 1929. Yet Breuer was only able to realise a single residential building in Germany. Only after emigrating to the United States did he succeed in making a name for himself as an architect. His works include this small weekend house, which he designed in 1951/52 for the sculptor Doris Porter Caesar and her husband Henry “Harry” Irvin Caesar for a plot of land by a lake in Lakeville, Connecticut. Marcel Breuer apparently liked the project so much that this little model stood on his desk for a long time.
