In 1929 Hinnerk Scheper took a leave of absence from his teaching position at the Bauhaus and travelled to Moscow with his wife Lou to help establish a central advisory centre for the use of colour in architecture. One of his projects there was the Narkomfin building, a long residential block with various types of flats, which was built as part of the state’s experimental construction programme for employees of the Ministry of Finance. Scheper was put in charge of the painting work. The colour scheme of the flats was tested in advance to determine the colours’ effect on people’s well-being. The walls of the small flats were painted in warm shades of pink and yellow, based on the root tone of the ceiling colour. In contrast, the staircase – as a space-defining element – was painted in warm shades of grey.
