In the early days of the Bauhaus, the metal workshop still saw itself as a “gold, silver and coppersmith’s workshop”. Naum Slutzky’s spherical copper case clearly shows the influence of the first artistic master, Johannes Itten: his primary focus was on free studies of form and an experimental exploration as well as handling of metallic materials. Slutzky, an experienced goldsmith and assistant master in the metal workshop since 1919, makes the craftsmanship involved in the process of producing this work visible. By contrast, later pieces from the metal workshop, such as Marianne Brandt’s tea infuser, generate a sense of industrial production with their smooth surfaces – even though they were also made by hand.
