Open Monument Day

Berlin’s Open Monument Day on 12 and 13 September is a unique opportunity to visit our historic museum. Based on this year’s motto “NETworks - Monuments & Infrastructure”, we invite you to one of multiple tours of the archive and museum, guided by our director Brigitte Franzen, the architect Volker Staab, Regine Krause from the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing, as well as other representatives of the Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung and Staab Architekten.

The building, in which the Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung is housed, was designed in 1965 by Walter Gropius together with his architect collective TAC to replace the Bauhaus-Archiv established in Darmstadt in 1960. The designs were adapted to the new location on Landwehrkanal in Berlin after 1970. The new museum with its distinctive shed roofs and reinforced concrete structures of varying heights opened in 1979. The building is now undergoing extensive renovation in accordance with landmark protection guidelines and is being expanded with a new annex by Staab Architekten.
