young bauhaus
30 August 2024 – 26 September 2024
young bauhaus is a group of young people who share an enthusiasm for the art and history of the Bauhaus. To be young bauhaus, we need a space, material and ourselves. That’s why we meet every week at the temporary bauhaus-archiv where we get creative, draw, fold, discuss and occasionally tattoo lemons.
From 30 August to 26 September 2024, we’ll be staging the exhibition “young bauhaus – in between identities” as curators of our own artistic works. To this end, we want to address various questions, such as: How can identity be expressed through design and architecture? What mechanisms of inclusion exist in art and design? How can we discuss and make such mechanisms visible? How can we translate the ideas and practices of the historic Bauhaus for contemporary audiences?
The exhibition should not only reflect our identity as a group, but also the many identities of our members who have the opportunity to engage with one another in this open forum. It’s about exploring such eclectic topics as Oskar Schlemmer’s “Triadic Ballet”, copper spirals, fashion design and trash. But above all, it’s about us and the world we want to grow up in as young people.
We drew inspiration from the Bauhaus preliminary courses which promoted creative learning and encouraged personal development and material experimentation. Our identities are our material. The participatory format of young bauhaus and the exhibition are an institutional experiment that forms a bridge from the historic Bauhaus to the present. We are savvy and bold – just like the members of the Bauhaus long ago. young bauhaus allows us to reexperience the Bauhaus as it once was – a place of learning and self-discovery for young people.
